In addition to the appropriate illumination and camera, selecting the right optics for an image processing system is one of the decisive criteria for successful and evaluable image acquisition. Aspects such as repeatability, measurement accuracy, reliability and freedom from errors are decisively influenced by the quality of the optics. The requirements for the imaging properties of the lens result from the features that are to be inspected on the object. Examples are:

  • A high color fidelity - requires a low longitudinal chromatic aberration, lateral chromatic aberration.

  • A high geometric fidelity - needs low distortion, coma, spherical aberration.

  • High fidelity of scaling - needs low perspective angle (telecentricity).

  • High flexibility - needs zoom capability.

  • High level of detail - balancing various aberrations.

When calculating the appropriate lens, we take into account various factors such as size, tilt of the object plane (Scheimpflug) and spectral range.
